This year's One World Festival is in High Lea Park, New Mills, on Saturday 29 June, from 12 noon until 6 pm. With its mixture of serious issues, good music and fun in the open air, the free one-day event shows once again that working for a better, fairer world is something we can all join in and enjoy.

"This isn't about dedicating your whole life to earnest principles,' say the committee. 'It's because we all have a better side, a side that cares. The Festival celebrates the goodwill that can be generated by our caring side, and gives a bit of insight into what people all over the area are achieving.'

The theme this year is 'Living in Safety'. Speakers will talk about the work of Maranatha, who provide shelter from trauma in Northern Ireland, Emmaeus, an international organisation providing work and jobs for homeless people, and High Peak and Derbyshire Dales Domestic Violence
Reduction Partnership, talking about their work in providing a safe place to live.

The committee are delighted that the Festival sees new organisations and enterprises each year, as well as providing updates on the work of those who have attended before. This year sees the launch of a brand-new caterer, 'The Buxton Tram', whose owner, Nina Lubman, promises to lure the crowds with vegetarian snacks, including Vegan Hot Dogs. "The very idea of Vegan Hot Dogs usually amuses people," she says. The tram doubles as a centre for information about vegetarianism, focussing especially on the High Peak and the north west.

The Festival is also hosting a community art project and the return of the plumber's pipe-bending workshop, which intrigued children and adults alike when it first appeared, last year. Also making a welcome return, and by popular request, will be Navrang Indian Dancers, who will be performing later this year in the Commonwealth Games celebrations.

There will be music from a wealth of local bands, right through the afternoon. "It will be a wonderful day," say the committee. "Whether you are a bouncy castle enthusiast, a music lover or committed to a cause, this is an afternoon you will remember."
