Hi everyone,
Hope that all is ok. We are now halfway through the season. Weatherwise so far we have had a great season, with the sun shining throughout most of April, May and June. Memberships are slightly down on last year but we will be doing some publicity around Wimbledon and the rest of the grass court season.
On the teams front, the junior boys under-18 team have won three matches and lost two. This is a good performance, especially as most of our team are under 16. Unfortunately it looks like the High Peak Mixed Doubles league will not happen this year due to a lack of interest from other clubs.
After a promising start to the season, our Mens North East Cheshire team are now struggling, having lost the last four matches. Two of these were very close, losing 8-10 and 8-9 at home. Two factors have not helped this year. Firstly we have been unable to field our strongest side for the home matches. Secondly we are playing in a higher division where first teams of smaller clubs are able to call on club coaches etc and high-level players to gain the number of required wins. It is very frustrating for us because we are more than capable of playing in Division 3. We are fighting hard to stay up and need to win 2 out of the remaining 4 matches.
On the International Tennis scene, I was lucky enough to see Roland Garros again for a sixth successive time, accompanied by Joe Heard-White, our promising tennis writer. Photos from the tournament will appear on this site shortly. It truly was a great tournament, with Nadal playing brilliantly to win his fourth consecutive final. He has since followed this up with a win at Queens Club. Federer has returned to form with a win in Halle. Federer or Nadal for Wimbledon I think with Ancic and Roddick outsiders. Maybe Murray too.
It was great to see Ivavanovic win the Ladies event at Roland Garros. She has a gereat chance at SW19 along with the Williams sisters and Maria Sharapova.
On Sunday 6th July at the Club, starting 10am we will run an American Doubles tournament followed by refreshments and the Wimbledon final in the Clubhouse.
See you on court
