4A
Team Captain : Chris Morton (Tel 01663 746529)
New
Mills Mens Doubles team have secured their place in Division 4 of
the North East Cheshire League. Although the side have struggled in
recent matches through a succession of injuries, they picked up crucial
points earlier in the season with key victories against Greave and
Strines. With a handful of matches remaining, Northern look certain
to win the division and win promotion to division 3.
Hazel Grove (drew 9-9)
In their first North-East Cheshire match of the season, New Mills
Tennis Club managed a credible draw against Hazel Grove 1. After the
first round, the sides were at three sets all and this pattern was
repeated throughout the match. Star performers for New Mills were
Perry Roberts and Paul Kloss, who won 5 sets out of 6 played and only
narrowly missed out on a tiebreak. New Mills other pairs were Phil
McGinnity/Chris Morton and Andrew Morton/Robert Morton, who each won
2 sets. The end result was a fair reflection of the closely fought
match, which either side could have won.
Greave
(won 9-6)
New Mills Tennis Club continued their good start in the North East
Cheshire League with a away win against Greave 1. New Mills were ahead
by 4 sets to 2 after the first round and kept the advantage to win
the match by 9 sets to 6. This was a solid all-round team performance
by New Mills, who played consistently despite narrowly failing to
take any sets from a very strong Greave first pair. New Mills doubles
pairs were Steve Jackson/Andrew Morton, Paul Kloss/Andy Orr and Chris
Morton/John Young.
Bramhall
Lane (lost 4-11)
New
Mills suffered their first defeat of the season in their away match
against Bramhall Lane. The home side started well and New Mills only
managed to win one set in the first round. This was a thrilling tiebreak,
eventually won 18-16 by John Young and Chris Morton. Although New
Mills managed to tie the next round 3 sets all, Bramhall finished
the match strongly ; winning the final three sets played to leave
the end result at 11 sets to 4.
West
Heaton (lost 4-11)
In their
home match against West Heaton 2 , New Mills were defeated 11 sets
to 4. West Heaton displayed consistent, attacking doubles play throughout
the match. However, New Mills were unlucky to win only 1 of five tiebreak
sets played.
Strines
(won 13-3)
In their local derby match against Strines, New Mills took the early
home advantage to lead by 5 sets to 1 after the first round. Although
a number of the sets were closely fought, New Mills kept their nerve
and secured victory after the second round. The final score was 13
sets to 3.
Of particular note was the performance of New Mills's first pair Paul
Kloss and Ben Salman who won all their sets with attacking, consistent
doubles play. The home side's other pairs were John Young/Chris Morton
(team captain) and Phil McGinnity/Andrew Morton.
Northern

New Mills were heavily defeated by 13 sets to 3, in their home match
against The Northern. Northern fielded a strong side and took five
out the first six sets played.

and Steve Jackson/Perry Roberts played well to win two sets against
the division leaders.

New Mills were unable to field their strongest side, they struggled

Ryecroft

Park Sports Club for the first time in three years. Although New Mills
managed to win sets, the result of the match was never in doubt. New

and Paul Kloss / Ian Higginbottom (2 sets). Having struggled throughout
the season largely through injuries, the Millers nevertheless managed
to stay in division 4 by the narrowest of margins (1 point).
