Prestbury (lost 9-6) - 12th May
In
their first North East Cheshire match of the season, New Mills were
narrowly beaten 9-6 by Prestbury 2. A strong Prestbury side took five
of the first six sets played and kept the lead throughout the match.
Newcomers to the side Andrew Storer and Craig Holland
had an impressive debut for the Millers, winning four sets. New Mills
next have difficult away matches against Bowdon and Alderley Edge.
Bowdon
I (lost 13-1) -
19th May
Unable to field a strong team, New
Mills were comprehensively beaten at Bowdon. Steve Jackson and Paul
Kloss managed to prevent a whitewash, winning one set for the away
side.
Alderley
Edge 3 (lost 9-6) -
25th May
In
their third North East Cheshire League match of the season, New Mills
were narrowly beaten by Alderley Edge 3. After the first round, the
teams were all square at 3 sets all. Alderley Edge narrowly took an
important tiebreak set to lead by seven sets to five at the end of
the second round. The match eventually finished 9-6 in the home side's
favour. Robert Webster had an impressive debut for the Millers
winning two sets with team captain Chris Morton . New Mills other
pairs were Steve Jackson/Paul Craven and Andy Storer/Craig Holland.
Without a win so far, the side probably need to win three of their
remaining seven matches in order to guarantee their place in the division
next season.
Croftside (won 8-10)
- 6th June
First
victory for the Millers: New
Mills Tennis Club clocked up their first win of the season in the
North East Cheshire League with a narrow home victory against Croftside.
New Mills took an important tiebreak set to lead at the end of the
first round. Croftside came back into the match winning the next round
by four sets to two. With the match all square at six sets all, New
Mills managed to squeeze home by 10 sets to 8.
Star
performers for New Mills were Perry Roberts and Paul Kloss
who won all their sets. Steve Jackson/Chris Morton and Andy Storer/Craig
Holland each won two sets for the Millers. In their next away match
against Hazel Grove, New Mills were in a strong position leading by
5 sets to 1 after the first round, when bad weather stopped play.
The side next have important home matches against Brooklands, Bramhall
Lane and Ryecroft.
Bramhall
Lane 4 (won 6-10) - 18th June
Despite conceding
a set to the opposition, New Mills took control of the match to lead
4-2 at the end of the first round. The next round was also won by
the same margin. The match eventually finished 10-6 in the home side's
favour. This was a good all-round performance by New Mills whose players
were John Young/Paul Craven, Chris Morton/Steve Jackson and Perry
Roberts/Paul Kloss.
Ryecroft
2 (draw 8-8) - 27th June
In their North East Cheshire
League home match against Ryecroft II, New Mills lost the first
round by 4 sets to 2. Playing against strong opposition, the Millers
were also trailing by 7 sets to 5 at the end of the second round.
However, they managed to win three of the last four sets played and
were unlucky not to win the match when bad light stopped play. The
final score was eight sets all and this was a valuable hard-won point
earned by New Mills, who have two wins and a draw from six matches
played. New Mills players were Paul Craven/Steve Jackson (3 sets won),
Chris Morton/John Young (3 sets won) and Paul Kloss/Ian Higginbottom
(2 sets won).
West
Heaton (lost 12-5)
In their away match against West Heaton, New Mills struggled to take
control of the match. Playing on shale courts, the Millers were 4
sets to 2 down at the end of the first round. West Heaton were leading
by 8 sets to 4 at the end of the second round. The final score was
12-5 in West Heatons favour. Overall, this wasn't a good team performance
by New Mills. Only Andy Storer and Craig Holland made an impact for
the away side; winning four sets out of six played.
Brooklands
2 (won 5-9)
The Mens North-East Cheshire Team virtually secured their place in
Division 4A next season with a hard-fought 9-5 victory over Brooklands
2. The match was evenly balanced from the start, with New Mills winning
some key tiebreak sets that eventually decided the match. New Mills
pairs were Perry Roberts / Paul Kloss, Chris Morton / Steve Jackson
& Paul Craven / John Young, who each won three sets.
Hazel
Grove (won 7-10)
Having drawn against Hazel Grove for the last two seasons, New Mills
were keen to win this time around. The match was closely fought and
the sides were level at six sets all going into the last round. The
match looked to be heading for another draw but New Mills kept their
nerve to win four out of the last five sets played. The final score
finished 10-7 in New Mills favour. Of particular note were the performances
of Perry Roberts/Paul Kloss and Andy Storer/Craig Holland who won
5 and 4 sets respectively.
Macclesfield (lost 17-1)
Due to holidays, injuries and general unavailability of players, New
Mills could only get 4 players to their last match of the season at
Macclesfield. We conceded 6 sets to the opposition but managed to
fulfil the fixture. Of the 12 sets played, only John Young and Chris
Morton managed to prevent a whitewash, winning a close tiebreak. The
final score was 17-1 to Macclesfield who fully deserve to win the
division this year. New Mills enjoyed the excellent meal provided
by the home side and wish them well in Division 3 next season.
